The Regional Medical Library
The New York Academy of Medicine Library was the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region for thirty nine years. The contract from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) ended in 2006. The mission of the Network is "to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by: 1) providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information; and 2) improving the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health." The RML, along with its seven counterparts across the country and the National Network Office at NLM, provide the leadership in regional and national outreach efforts to fulfill the Network mission.
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), the first comprehensive national library network, began in 1967. Under the leadership of the National Library of Medicine and through the participation of medical libraries and other information resources throughout the nation, it has developed into a well-organized and effective network for meeting the information needs of the nation's health professionals.
